How to bring up Jesus at Christmas (and nail it)

Making the most of sharing Jesus this Christmas means making the most of the conversations we’re having. Let’s be honest, we’ve all had that awkward moment when you feel a really witty comment jump out of your mouth and it crashes and burns in silence. It didn’t hit the comedic mark…

It is highly likely that one or more of these elements of communication wasn’t quite right:

1 — CONTENT

Be aware of the content that is relevant to the people you are interacting with. What are the questions about life or spirituality that they are asking?

2 — CONTEXT

Be willing to talk about spiritual and philosophical ideas with an open-handed posture. Let’s avoid Christianese and bring context to the spiritual awareness that people are trying to express.

3 — TIMING

Be sensitive to the different pace each person moves at as they explore faith. Create open spaces for discussion that meet people where they are at.

Here are 3 practical ways to navigate spiritual conversations this Christmas:

PRAY

Ask the Holy Spirit to give you empathy and patience with people around you.

CONNECT

Go deeper in conversation with someone by asking an open-ended question about what they value.

RESPOND

Commit to not being defensive of the truth.

Make the most of Christmas this year by approaching Jesus-conversations with empathy and a desire to learn, not just to give. Be okay to leave absolute truth at the door and trust the Holy Spirit to be at work through you as others search out faith.

DAILY CHALLENGE

Ask someone who doesn’t follow Jesus what they value about Christmas.

Light up Jesus conversations with your family

Are there people in your family that don’t know Jesus? Do you have a heart to see them follow Jesus? Christmas is a great time for conversations about Jesus, but have you ever felt like it’s more difficult to talk about your faith with family members than with friends, colleagues, or even strangers? Your family members probably know you better than anyone, yet you find it awkward to talk about your relationship with God. Why is this?

Here’s a quick guide to help you navigate faith conversations at Christmas with your family...

There’s more at stake

Sharing one’s faith is a vulnerable step as it risks rejection. The threat of being rejected by a family member is likely to be scarier than that of a friend, so we might be less honest with family members when it comes to big issues like our faith.

Family members will give you their unfiltered reaction

It’s harder to share with family because they may be more vocal about their judgment/pushback against your beliefs.

We all have a desire to be accepted and approved of

We all want to be accepted, and this is especially true when it comes to family. You may avoid talking about your faith because you don’t want it to lead to conflict or disapproval.

Your family knows you better than anyone

You may feel like family members hold you to a higher standard, so sharing your faith can lead to feelings of shame, guilt, or being “hypocritical” because you’re not perfect.

Jesus says in Matthew 5:14 that you are called to be a light in your world - including amongst your family. You don’t need to let the fear of a negative reaction stop you from talking about Jesus!

Let’s reframe each of those excuses:

  • There’s more at stake (if I don’t tell them about Jesus)
  • Family members will give you their unfiltered reaction (which can facilitate authentic, honest faith conversations)
  • We all have a desire to be accepted and approved of (you have a heavenly father who unconditionally loves and accepts you, and is cheering you on)
  • Your family knows you better than anyone (so they will see the way that God has changed your life)

Here are 3 tips to help you share your faith with your family:

1. Start with baby steps.

Choose someone that you feel safest with, and share with them what God has been doing in your life. See how they respond, and choose your next step from there.

2. Live a life that is an example of Christ.

Allow them to see Jesus through your actions rather than just your words. Demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit. Let peace, love, and joy shine out like a light on a hill pointing to Jesus. (Galatians 5:22-23)

3. Let your faith infiltrate your household.

Play worship music, have scriptures hanging on your walls, and don’t shy away from talking about the good things God is doing in your life.

Is there someone in your family that you’re believing to be saved? Write their name down and commit to praying for them in the days leading up to Christmas. Ask God to soften their heart and to give you opportunities to make the most of Christmas by sharing Jesus with them!

Bible Verses

Matthew 5:14-16 – “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Galatians 5:22-23 – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”

Magnetic Generosity draws people to Jesus

Have you ever been surprised by someone’s generosity at Christmas? Christmas has a way of making us think about other people’s needs before our own—defying the natural selfish tendencies of humanity.

Generosity is not based on your economic status, nor is it determined by the size of your bank account; but rather by the size of your heart towards others. Generosity is the habit of giving without persuasion. It has no social bounds.

To put it simply, generosity can be a very effective way to share Jesus at Christmas time.

Christmas celebrates God’s generous gift of Jesus. Isaiah 9:6 says that God gave His Son to the world, who would be a Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, and Philippians 2:4-8 says that Jesus gave up his place of privilege in heaven to live a life as a man and ultimately gave up that life as an act of generous love that can inspire our own acts of generosity towards others.

Here’s how your generosity at Christmas time can be a powerful way to share Jesus:

  • Generosity creates opportunity—it stands out in a culture of self-promotion.
  • Generosity has power when it is devised and planned.
  • Generosity will bless the hearts of those who receive it—people who don’t know Jesus can experience a slice of God’s kingdom.
  • Generosity stretches your faith—it builds your trust in God.
  • God reaches the world through the generosity of His people.

There are countless other moments and verses in the Bible that show the beauty and power of generosity. Without a doubt, having a generous spirit is the most rewarding and most effective way to live as a Christian. It is also the most effective way to lead people to Jesus.

Make the most of Christmas and use the power of generosity to point people towards Jesus.

BIBLE VERSES

Isaiah 9:6 – For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Philippians 2:4-8 – And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Acts 20:35 – In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

Burst your bauble, oops *bubble

Christmas can be a great time of connection; however, as humans, we’re often tempted to stay in our relational safety bubble. Make the most of Christmas this year by bursting your bauble bubble 😉 and being intentional about strengthening your relational connection with the people immediately around you.

Humans are hardwired for genuine connection. And it’s in that space Jesus calls you to share him with the world.

After His death and resurrection, Jesus said, “you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Notice the progression of Jesus’ instructions: Jerusalem followed by Judea and Samaria, and finally the ends of the earth.

For the disciples, Jerusalem was the immediate area, the center of their culture and society. Make the most of Christmas this year by limiting your hyper-connection with the world and exploring true, genuine connection with the people immediately around you.

Here are 3 practical ways to burst your relational bubble this Christmas:

PRAY

Ask the Holy Spirit to highlight people He wants you to intentionally connect with this Christmas.

CONNECT

Foster deeper connections with people immediately around you—your friends, family, and the people you see every day.

RESPOND

Follow the leading of the Holy Spirit and take opportunities to open up conversations about Jesus, church, and faith.

Make the most of Christmas by being present in the moment and building genuine connection with the people immediately around you.

DAILY CHALLENGE

Ask someone “How are you doing today?” and intentionally listen to their answer.
